What the Forge of Potential does
The Forge of Potential takes a max-quality weapon, tool, or armor piece one level beyond its normal cap. A matching Battle Idol is used for weapons and tools; a matching Protection Idol is used for armor. The attempt can destroy the item, so this is an optional endgame gamble rather than normal upgrading.
Community data inspection for the 1.0 build reports a 65% success chance. On failure, the item is destroyed and only part of its material cost is returned. Do not refine unique or expensive equipment unless you can rebuild it.
Where to find the Forge
Search the Mountains. When a player comes close, an Idol-shaped map marker appears and remains. Collected field reports found the structure high on a mountain and sometimes near Moder, but proximity to Moder is not confirmed as a universal placement rule.
Prepare for the cold with Frost Resistance mead or suitable wolf armor. Once the map marker appears, approach the actual Forge rather than assuming every reserved world-generation location exists.
Idol tiers and matching gear
Idols appear as random chest loot in points of interest such as abandoned houses, chambers, towers, shipwrecks, and grave sites. The biome determines the material tier.
| Biome | Idol tier | Battle Idol | Protection Idol |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Wooden | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Black Forest | Bronze | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Swamp | Iron | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Mountains | Silver | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Plains | Black Metal | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Mistlands | Black Marble | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Ashlands | Flametal | Weapons and tools | Armor |
| Deep North | Bloodgold | Weapons and tools | Armor |
The tier must match the equipment's material family. A Bronze Protection Idol cannot refine an iron armor piece, and a Protection Idol cannot substitute for a Battle Idol.
How to attempt a refinement
- Max the item's ordinary quality at its normal station.
- Carry the item, its matching Idol, and the required recipe materials.
- Interact with the Forge of Potential.
- Select the item and review the displayed result and cost.
- Move away from fragile gear storage and restore full health.
- Choose Attempt Refinement only if a replacement is affordable.
A failed attempt also damages the player, so do not interact at low health. The Forge performs refinements only; it does not replace the original Workbench, Forge, or Black Forge used to craft the item.
Is refinement worth it?
Refine gear that is already central to the build and cheap enough to reproduce. The collected 1.0 example of a Bronze Sword gained durability, slash damage, and block force, but not every stat changed. Inspect the preview instead of assuming every attribute improves.
For a first Deep North run, stable food, resistance, upgraded normal gear, and a safe return route matter more than chasing a lucky refinement. Treat the system as a late optimization after the progression route is secure.
